How to read a medicine label safely

A medicine label contains important information about what a product is, how it should be used, and when extra care is needed. Take time to read the complete label before use.

Check the active ingredient and strength

Look for the active ingredient and the amount in each tablet, capsule, measured dose or other unit. Different products can contain the same ingredient, so comparing labels can help you avoid accidentally taking duplicate ingredients. Ask a pharmacist if any wording is unclear.

Follow the directions and warnings

Read the stated dose, timing, route of use, age restrictions, warnings and instructions about food or other medicines. Do not assume that a dose suitable for one person is suitable for another. Children, older adults, pregnant people and people with ongoing medical conditions may need individual advice.

Check expiry and storage information

Do not use a product if its packaging is damaged, its identity is uncertain, or it is past its expiry date. Follow the storage instructions and keep medicines out of reach of children.

When to ask for help

Ask a pharmacist or qualified healthcare professional before use if you have allergies, take other medicines, are unsure about the directions, or notice an unexpected reaction. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
